The Fianchetto Variation
The following game between
Andrei Sokolov and Jan Hein Timman
from 1987 is a nice illustration of the Modern defense without 4...Bg4.
1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 4.Nf3
The Modern Variation
4...g6
The Fianchetto Variation, played in 25% of the games. This is the most important alternative for the move 4...Bg4
5.Bc4 Nb6 6.Bb3 Bg7 7.Ng5 e6
( or 7...d5 8.f4 f6 9.Nf3 Nc6 10.c3 and now I prefer to continue with 10...Bg4 )
8.f4
( or 8.Qf3 Qe7 9.Ne4 dxe5 )
8...dxe5 9.fxe5 c5 10.c3 cxd4 11.O-O O-O 12.cxd4 Nc6 13.Nf3 f6 14.exf6 Qxf6 15.Be3 Nd5 16.Bf2 Nf4 = An equal position 17.Nc3 Nh3+ 18.gxh3 Qxf3 19.Qxf3 Rxf3 20.Nb5 Kh8?! +/- I don\'t like this move
( After 20...Bd7 =+ Black has a small advantage )
21.Kg2 Rd3 22.Rad1 Rxd1 23.Rxd1 Bd7 24.Nc7 Rc8 25.Nxe6 Na5 26.Nc5 Bf5 27.Bd5 b6 28.Be6 Rc6 29.d5 Rxc5 30.Bxf5 gxf5 31.b4 Rc7 32.bxa5 bxa5 33.d6 Rd7 34.Rd5 Bc3 +-
( 34...Bf6!? is probably better, but not good enough )
35.Rc5 Bf6 36.Rc8+ Kg7 37.Rc7 Rf7 38.d7 Bd8 39.Rxa7 f4 40.Kf3 Kg6 41.a4 Kg7 42.Rb7 h6 43.Bd4+ Kf8 44.Bc5+ Kg7 45.Bf2 h5 46.Bd4+ Kf8 47.Bc5+ Kg7 48.Bf2 h4 49.Bd4+ Kh7 50.Bb6 Bxb6 51.d8=Q Rxb7 52.Qd3+ Kh8 53.Qb5 Kg7 54.Qc6 Rb8 55.Qd6 Rb7 56.Qe5+ Kg8 57.Qe8+ Kg7 58.Qb5 Kg8 59.Qc6 Rb8 60.Qg6+ Kh8 61.Qh6+ Kg8 62.Qg5+ Kh7 63.Qxh4+ Kg8 64.Qg5+ Kh7 65.Qh5+ Kg8 66.Qd5+ Kh7 67.Qd6 Rb7 68.Qd3+ Kh8 69.Qb5 Kh7 70.h4 1-0
